World of Sneakers

History of the sneaker part 1.

The sneaker, Trainer Kicks etc. has existed since the late 1800’s mainly used as sports or beach shoes. In 1916 Keds a plimsoll brand was introduced to the United States and became known as sneakers because of their quiet rubber soles.  Only one year later came the Converse All Star shoe in 1917, followed by Adidas, Puma and Nike later in the 1900’s. American teenagers began wearing sneakers as casualwear off the sports field during the 50ties inspired by movie stars like James Dean. In 1968 Tommie Smith was wearing Puma trainers when he won the 200 m at the Olympics in Mexico. Receiving his gold medal he raised his fist in the Black Power salute, this made the shoe become a cult item on the streets. By the 1980s the Trainer market had become huge and leading brands teamed up with high fashion designers, in order to get their slice of the cake. Yohji Yamamoto collaborated with Adidas and created the sleek black and white three stripes cult trainer Y-3 range. Stella McCartney also designed for Adidas but aiming for outdoor sports hip, with tennis and running shoes. Paul smith designed for Reebok and Mihara Yasuhiro for puma focusing on stripes and metallic.  Sometimes the early hip-hop culture would help bring attention to certain sneakers and thereby promoting them via songs and movies such as Run-DMC with the single “My Adidas” , 1986.

"PROPER IVY" 1981 Japanese magazine Popeye

I recently found this Japanese fashion magazine "POPEYE" from 1981 in the basement.
It is interesting to see how 'preppy style' was a trend back then.

My parents have often mentioned the rivalry between the two Japanese fashion brands "Van" (American Ivy Style) and "Jun" (European Casual Style), both established in the post-war era. Apparently many students chose 'side' (great branding strategies btw.) and it seems like the two preppy brands have had a remarkable impact on Tokyo fashion and sub-cultures in the 60ies-70ies.

PH, a revolutionary man, in many ways !

Getting to know Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen is known worldwide for his lamps, which in their time were revolutionary because of the special screen construction, that allowed the lamps full glow, without being blinding.  Most of his designs are stunning and do really give a special quality of light, but PH was much more than a designer.  He was a architect, screen writer, film director and writer, during the second world war he fled to Sweden in a rowboat together with Arne Jacobsen, because Arne Jacobsen was a Jew and he himself a known resistant of Nazism.
Like most of the leading architects of that time, he was a craftsman and hadn’t attended the Copenhagen art academy architectural school.  He was one of the leading figures in the cultural radical movement often associated with the modern breakthrough. The cultural-radicalism was about reevaluation of religion, inherited social norms and welcoming new cultural impulses such as jazz, modern architecture, art, literature and theater.  Poul Henningsen was a big fan of Josephine Baker The “ Bronze Venus”. After she received a wave of bad reviews based on her show in Denmark, Poul Henningsen half an hour before deadline, decided to write a letter to Josephine through the paper politiken, that praised her naturalness. Saying "If naturalness could be learned, mothers should send the girls to Josphine baker". Poul Henningsen ideal was kubism, and he remained true to to functionalisme til his death, dying from parkinsons he donated his body to medical science purposes.

Known PH Statements
Culture is weapons.
Culture is consistency.
Dividedness makes strong.
There is no off-taste. There is only good taste, which is poor.
He who dares do wrong, does right. Hereby is happens.

The Copenhagen Vision Fashion Fair

Visiting the Copenhagen fashion fair last friday, we were cornered by a very enthusiastic man possibly Swedish with a British accent possibly a Brit. He was there helping his Swedish wife Camilla Mørch exhibit her 2013 "Let it rain" collection.  Camilla Mørch's flagship raincoat, was very nice while on the same time, being of high quality and having a high durability. Furthermore, the raincoat came in  a variety of colors and in the cutest little bags.  www.camillamorch.eu

The Copenhagen Vision fashion fair was taken over by the Swedes!
Another cool Swedish brand a. nordin

This multifunctional bag, actually consisted of two bags, where the inner bag (represented by the inner part of the u shape) can be used singularly or replaced for the same bag in a different color. www.anordin.com

A very interesting Danish brand,  Epoque a subbrand to Edith&Ella Copenhagen.

Ilse Jacobsen a popular danish brand. Mainly because of their stylish rain boots, the popularity has even extended to Soul; South Korea, where the boots, like in Denmark are "hot stuff"!

Even the Italians were represented at the fair. The Italian brand Pashmere, sell relaxed design made of 100 percent cashmere and produced In Italy. www.pashmere.it

Finally, there was yet another very promising swedish brand, diis. Very feminine & very soft. www.diis.se

Last but not least, a mix of facinating designs from different brands.

Amazing Japanese demolition work

After 40 years, the Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka (140m) in Tokyo closed in 2011 in order to make space for new constructions.

This video show how a skyscraper can be demolished without using explosives. The building is lowered slowly and disappears from the skyline. This technology increases security for the workers and reduces sound and dust clouds remarkably. Amazing!

Summing up the video:
- Grand Prince Hotel was build in 1983, during the economic boom in Japan
- Top floor is held in place by temporary columns while two floors are being demolished at once and the building "shrinks" approx 6m in 3 hours.
- Japanese construction companies are competing in order to provide the best solution for demolishing old buildings from the 60ies that do not meet new construction standards.

Ambitious JAPAN (JR東海のぞみCMソング 2003)

(I get a true love)

※Be ambitious!
Be ambitious!
Be ambitious!

(I get a true love)
